How to Caramelize Onions

  • 2 Tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 2 pounds yellow onions
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme (optional) (or rosemary)


  • Peel and thinly slice the onions.
  • Heat a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. When hot, add the oil.
  • When the oil is heated, add all of the onions to the pan. Add the salt and dried herbs (if using) and stir.
  • Cook the onions, stirring every 5-7 minutes. Continue cooking until the onions are as caramelized as you prefer, approximately 30 minutes. If you feel they are almost burning, turn down the heat.
