Put the basil and lemon juice in the bottom of a cocktail shaker. Use a muddler to press and squeeze the basil to extract the oils and flavor.Make sure you press it really well to get as much flavor out of it as possible!
Add the gin, simple syrup, and scoop of ice.
Cover and shake the shaker until the shaker is very cold, about 30 seconds.
Strain into a glass filled with ice. Use a fine mesh strainer if desired to avoid any small pieces of basil getting out.
Garnish with basil and lemon wedges or circles as desired and serve.
Notes
Don't have a cocktail shaker? You can use a tall drinking glass and a fine mesh strainer.Don't have a muddler? You can use the end of a wooden spoon or something else that is somewhat flat.Need to make simple syrup? Combine one part sugar to one part water (I like to do 1/2 cups) and bring to a simmer until the sugar is dissolved, then remove from heat. Can be stored in the refrigerator for up to a month.
