Modifications and Substitutions

Most of the pumpkin spice blend recipes out there are exactly the same.  

I find the blend to be a little heavy on allspice and cloves, so I have made an adjustment where the cinnamon and ginger shine more.

  1. When it comes to pumpkin spice, or any spice for that matter, I tend to grab whatever’s on the shelf and simply use it. However, I love that you actually break it down to it’s core and create one that you prefer. Switching it up to focus more on cinnamon than cloves is an awesome idea so the taste is a lot more richer. Super smart move, and great recipe Kim!!!

  2. My question is why do you have to add allspice. I don’t have any so I and looked up the recipe for it and it is (cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves). So can I leave this out without completely changing the taste?

    • Hi Cheryl,
      Allspice is made from dried pimenta fruit. There are ways to make combinations with other spices to substitute for it. From what I have seen, there are varying opinions about the ratio of cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves to replace that flavor. But you can absolutely skip it and adjust the seasoning of the rest of the ingredients until you have the ratio you prefer.
