About Chipotle Peppers
Chipotle peppers are smoked jalapenos. When you buy chipotle in adobo from the store, you are getting the smoked peppers that are in a smoked tomato sauce.
This sauce and the peppers bring great flavor for so many Mexican foods! I just LOVE making chipotle flavored recipes.
I love to get the jars where the peppers are already finely chopped and mixed into the sauce, but it is most common to find the whole peppers in sauce at the store. No matter what you use, you can use some of the peppers plus the sauce for amazing flavor.
Modifications and Substitutions
Yes, technically sour cream and crema are different things. Crema is thinner. You can achieve a thinner consistency by adding water a little at a time until it is the thickness you want.
Want it spicier? Add more chipotles, or chipotle sauce.
Want it mild? Use just half of the chipotle in adobo amount, and then add 1/2 teaspoon of ground paprika. Or replace the chipotle altogether with a teaspoon of paprika. The paprika gives you the same smoky pepper flavor with no heat.

- Measuring Cups
Ingredients
- 8 ounces sour cream (1 cup)
- 1 ½ Tablespoons chipotle in adobo sauce see note 1
- 1 Tablespoon lime juice
- ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- water if needed, as needed
Instructions
- Combine all ingredients except water together.8 ounces sour cream, 1 ½ Tablespoons chipotle in adobo sauce, 1 Tablespoon lime juice, ¼ teaspoon garlic powder, ¼ teaspoon salt
- If desired, add water for a thinner consistency more similar to a real crema. Adjust heat as desired (see note 2 and 3).water
- Chill at least 30 minutes, ideally, for flavors to combine.
Notes
- You can use just the sauce from a can/jar of chipotle in adobo. If desired, you can also finely chop up some of the actual chipotle peppers to add (SO good). The diced peppers can be measured with, or in addition to, of the sauce based on heat preference.
- This recipe will yield a mild to mild-medium heat, based on brand. Make spicier by adding more chipotle in adobo, whether the sauce or finely diced peppers.
- If you want the same flavor but less heat, use half the amount of chipotle in adobo and then add 1/2 teaspoon ground paprika. The paprika will give you the same smoky flavor without heat.
