Why You Will Love This Recipe

I LOVE to make fun themed cocktails for holidays and parties, like my Poison Apple Halloween Cocktail.

I remember watching the Purple People Eater on TV when I was younger.

And the character is perfect to bring back for Halloween! I have already used it as inspiration for my

Purple People Eater Halloween Popcorn Balls and now this Halloween vodka cocktail.

Not familiar with the character? This drink recipe also passes off as a monster recipe.

Whether you are looking for a kiddie cocktail or a non-alcoholic option, this monster drink is perfect!

It only requires minimal changes and allows everyone in on the fun. See below for an instruction summary or the recipe itself for full ingredients and instructions.

The Purple People Eater Halloween Cocktails (+Mocktail) ready to serve

Ingredients

Here is what you need to make this Halloween drink:

  • Vodka
  • Blue Curacao
  • Lemonade
  • Grenadine

For the non-alcoholic mocktail:

  • Lemonade
  • Grenadine
  • Blue Food Coloring

Equipment

Here is the equipment you need for this recipe:

  • Cocktail Shaker (or another tall glass)
  • Serving Glass
  • Ice
  • Small Lemon Wedges
  • Ping Pong Eyeballs

Ping Pong Eyeballs – You might be able to find the ping pong eyeballs locally when Halloween decor comes out, or grab them online.

Instruction Summary – Cocktail

First mix the blue curacao, grenadine, and vodka together in a shaker with ice. This helps make it really cold so the ice in the glass does not melt quickly.

Add to a glass of ice. Top it off with lemonade then add the ping pong eyeball and a horn lemon wedge, and you are ready to serve!

Instruction Summary – Mocktail (Non-Alcoholic)

In the serving glass, combine the grenadine and blue food coloring. Mix.

Fill with ice and top with lemonade.

I also like to use a little sparkling water or lemon lime soda for a fancy touch and some bubbles!

Modifications and Substitutions

Lemon lime soda could be used instead of lemonade. It will have a lighter citrus flavor and also bring bubbles.

Want to make it bubbly? Add club soda or tonic water to the mix.

Garnishes

Since this recipe is inspired by the one-eyed, one-horned, flying purple people eater, I wanted to give it that look!

To make the horn, cut lemons into slices. Then, cut a circle slice into a triangle for the horn.

Cut a very small slit through the rind, just past the rind, and place on the glass.

For the eyeball, I use ping pong ball eyeballs from the Halloween section at the dollar store. You can also find them online.

There are gummy eyeballs, but they tend to be flat and do not float, so you will need to prop them up on ice.

Large Batches

Easily make a large batch of either version in advance!

Simply multiply the quantities of everything you need for either recipe and place them all in a punch bowl or pitcher. The recipe card below allows you to select how many cocktails you want to make and will do math for you.

No need to worry about shaking with ice, but if you can keep the mixture cool, it will prevent the ice in the glasses from melting quickly when you pour.

And make sure you have your horns and eyes out for everyone to decorate!

FAQs

What is blue curacao?

Blue curacao is a commonly used liqueur that is made with orange citrus flavoring.
It is very common and popular for the bright and bold blue color that lends well to colored cocktails.

Is there alcohol in Blue Curacao?

Yes. The amount varies by brands, but it is typically in the range of 25% ABV which is lower than many liquors (40% average).

What does Blue Curacao taste like?

Since blue curacao is a citrus based liqueur, it is a tart and sweet flavor, very similar to a citrus effect like you would see in triple sec.

Notes

Gummy eyeballs are a great option, but do not float. If using, you will need to prop them up on top of the ice. They also tend to be flat and not round.
You can find ping pong eyeballs at a dollar store or online.
Make ahead for the group easily by increasing the quantity of supplies and mix into a punch bowl or pitcher.
